Miraculous Comeback in Montclair
Posted on October 14th, 2017

Coming off a long weekend with no games, the Black Knights were poised and ready to snag their first win of the season against the Montclair State University Redhawks. The game began with a goalie duel as Montclair's tender stopped everything the Cadets threw at him, and Sophomore goalie #1 Jack Kraus opened strong in his first Collegiate start. The second period saw Army's Captain #26 Matt Reihl one time a goal, putting Army on top 1-0.

Both teams headed into the third period slow, as the two goalies continued to battle it out for the lowest score, but that would soon change. An Army penalty gave the Redhawks' a prime opportunity midway through the third to launch a comeback, and they wasted no time. Scoring off a rebound shot from the point Montclair tied the game at 1. It wasn't much later that the Redhawks found their chance to take the lead and capitalized making it 2-1. Gaining and holding onto the momentum, Montclair pressed on to score a third unanswered goal with just over 8 minutes left in the game.

Demoralized and shocked by Montclair's sudden surge, Army looked like it had fallen apart. Immediately after the third goal Coach Rob Loderstodt called a timeout to allow Army to regroup: it worked. The Black Knights came back flying. Led by Captain Matt Reihl Army launched its counter attack. Scoring his second of the game, Reihl gave Army hope with just 7 minutes left in the game. It wasn't long after that #22 Austen Pearson banged in a rebound goal to tie it up. Pearson had an emotional return to hockey after missing all of last season with a torn ACL, and in his first game in over a year he put Army in a great position to win.

With the clock winding down, the game appeared it might relent to overtime, but with just 2:12 on the clock freshman #3 Luke Schneider tucked a rebound to put Army back on top 4-3. With the ice now tilted down towards the Montclair net, Army was able to hold on to their narrow lead throughout the 2 minutes of 6 on 5 hockey, after Montclair pulled their goalie. Army is back at it today against Rowan University and are hunting for their second win of the year.
