West Point, NY - History was made on February 14, just not the kind West Point's Cadet hockey club hoped for, with Navy (DI) earning a hard-fought victory. ‚ÄčThe 6-3 final score did not indicate how evenly the teams matched up for the first two periods and most of the third, with two quick Navy goals in the third and an empty-netter providing the final margin.

Army freshman goaltender Robbie Fenton flashed the leather, scrambling and making point-blank saves on odd-man rushes to pace the Cadet squad. Navy netminder Matt Truninger kept pace, stopping Army on multiple high-quality scoring chances throughout the game.

Navy struck first at 6:01 in the first at the end of a powerplay, The tightly contested first period ended 1-0. Army wasted no time in the second, eveing the score at 1-1 just 30 seconds in with a powerplay goal of its own. Michael St. Denis lit the lamp with a helper from Thane Heller. Navy struck back at even strength, but Army responded less than 3 minutes later with a goal from Logan Schmidt assisted by Drew Lysakowski. Navy closed the period with another powerplay goal and led 3-2 at the second intermission.

Army came out in the third looking to even the game, but Navy goals 30 seconds apart at 2:56 and 3:21 of the period stretched the lead to 5-2. Army forward Thane Heller drew the Cadets to 5-3 on assists from Matthew Ouellette and Michael St. Denis. Playing with an empty net the last 2 minutes of the game, Army pressed the play but a Navy empty-net goal sealed the victory.
