West Point Routs Future NCAA DIII Squad
Posted on November 7th, 2014

Danbury, CT (Danbury Ice Arena) - West Point Club Hockey's cadets made a relatively short road trip October 17-18 and were rewarded with a two-game series sweep over Western Connecticut State University, a team moving into the NCAA Division III ranks in the 2015-2016 season.

Game 1 ended in a 10-4 West Point blowout victory. The cadet skaters jumped out to a quick lead, with Drew Lysakowski lighting the lamp less than 4 minutes into the game, assisted by Matthew Riehl and Mitch Deritter. The floodgates opened and West Point followed with five more goals in the first scored by Cory Miller (two goals), Tyler Weaver, John Anderson, and Riehl. Assists went to James Morsch, John Anderson, Tyler Rettke, and Drew Lysakowski.

The second period started with West Point's seventh straight goal, as Michael St. Denis (assist to Jeffery Johnston) deposited the disc behind the West Conn State goaltender less than 2 minutes into the period. West Conn State responded later in the period with their first goal of the game.

West Conn State drew within four at 7-3 with two more goals leading off the third period. Army responded as Riehl fed Deritter for an eighth Black Knight goal. After West Conn State's fourth goal, West Point's road warriors closed out the game with two late goals by Riehl and Rettke (assists to St. Denis, Morsch, and Deritter). Robert Fenton backstopped the West Point team to victory, which finished ahead in shots 30-22.

The second game saw West Conn State looking to even the series, but West Point denied the home team and skated out of Danbury with a 5-1 win. Five straight West Point goals (three in the first, two in the second) quickly put the game out of reach.

Two West Point cadets dominated the scoring, with Logan Schmidt netting two goals followed by a Riehl 'natural' hat-trick (three straight goals). Assists were booked by Riehl (a four-point night), Rettke (three assists), Miller, and Weaver.

West Point will feed its Philly cheesesteak jones with a three-game road spin against Penn and Villanova, October 24-26.
