Cadets Have Tough Weekend at Syracuse

Syracuse, NY (Tennity Ice Pavilion) - West Point Club Hockey took on ACHA D1 powerhouse and nationally-ranked Syracuse this weekend. Despite valiant efforts both nights, the Black Knights ultimately fell 8-3 and 5-1. Following is a summary adapted from the Syracuse team website.

Army faced Syracuse In its season opener in a packed Tennity Ice Pavillion. The Orange outshot the Black Knights 45-24. Army opened up the scoring with 12:48 left in the first period when defenseman Zach Cohen connected on the Black Knights’ fourth shot of the game. Syracuse responded less than 20 seconds later, then netted two more goals. Army forward John Anderson scored late in the first to close to 3-2 at intermission.

The second period featured three Syracuse goals, then Army starting center Alex Miller brought the Black Knights back within three at 6-3 with a nifty deke. Syracuse closed out the game with two final goals.

Game 2 of the series produced a 5-1 victory for Syracuse. In a game featuring 14 penalties, Syracuse scored twice in the first and added three in the second, going up 5-0. Army fought hard in the third period, putting up a late goal by Tyler Rettke, but went down 5-1 to suffer a series sweep.

Army returns to action next weekend against two Division II foes, University of Pittsburgh and Bucknell University.
